In the last month of December the GBIF Portuguese Node performed the national roadmap of seminars GBIF Information Day, which was attended by 159 participants from 26 different institutions, including universities and research institutions, ICNF (the national nature conservation and forests agency), regional and local administration, private companies, NGOs and aquariums.
The aim of the roadmap was to familiarize the participants with the biodiversity data resources, software and protocols available for data use and publication through GBIF. Seminars included an hands-on session for practicing queries and data use based on GBIF portal. The events took place in seven portuguese universities which also co-organized the roadmap, namely the University of Algarve (Faro), University of Évora (Évora), University of Lisboa (MUHNAC and FCUL, Lisbon), University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (Vila Real), Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (Porto) and University of Coimbra (Coimbra).
Among the topics discussed in the seminars, participants showed great interest in data papers item and how these may contribute to the promotion and credit attribution of the use of biodiversity data. There was also great interest in access to GBIF data portal using the OpenRefine software.
The strong community participation allowed to identify potential new collaborations, including several expressions of interest in the publication of biodiversity data. These contacts will be continued by the Node, to promote data mobilisation of new datasets. Similarly, if there is interest in repeat the seminar in another location or institution, you can contact the Portuguese Node via email firstname.lastname@example.org to explore this possibility.
