GBIF.PT - Biodiversity Data Management Center of the Portuguese Node of GBIF

Welcome to GBIF.PT-BDMC

GBIF.PT-Biodiversity Data Management Center is the data center rooted in GBIF Portugal, to provide event and occurrence biodiversity data. We expand GBIF services and training to the national context. We link with other data centers in the framework of the National Program for Open Science and Open Research Data (PN CADAI)

Main Goals

Expansion of Training Programs

GBIF.PT will expand training programs by developing massive open online courses (MOOCs) in Portuguese, in addition to face-to-face workshops on computer science applied to biodiversity.

Greater Private Sector Involvement

To achieve a greater private sector involvement, GBIF.PT will encourage the publication of data from Environmental Impact Assessments and Monitoring Programs, based on EDP’s positive experience. Local administration will also be a target sector for data sharing.

Strengthening Support for Data Publishing

GBIF.PT will strengthen support for data publishing by promoting the adoption of the new GBIF data model and exploring the application of experience gained to other natural resources and environment domains.

Work Packages

WP1 - CAPACITY ENHANCEMENT AND TRAINING
Task 1.1. Perform three in-person, hands-on, training workshops, on the following topics:
  • i) Data publication through GBIF,
  • ii) Data quality and data cleaning
  • iii) Use of Specify for collections management
Task 1.2. Create high quality MOOCs of the training workshops.
The topics of the online workshops will be the same as the in-person workshops.
WP2 - ENGAGEMENT WITH PUBLISHER COMMUNITIES
Task 2.1. Support data publication.
Support data publishers in the preparation of new datasets for publication.
Task 2.2. Promote data publishing by the private sector.
Overcome the limitation of the allocation of man-power to perform the data publication flow. The Portuguese Node will dedicate effort to perform these tasks, leveraging the value of existing data, but pursuing a sustainable model for future publications by these companies.
Task 2.3. Engage with the local administration.
Many municipalities have regular biodiversity monitoring activities, some evolving citizen science. This task aims to develop a plan to mobilise these data, and involve the local administration in data use activities.
WP3 - EXPAND CURRENT DATA MODEL
Task 3.1. Prepare for a new data model.
GBIF is developing a new data model that is being implemented on a use case by use case basis. This task will be dedicated to understanding the changes (data structures, file formats as, e.g., frictionless data), preparing new training and communication materials, to engage researchers to new possibilities about data publication.
Task 3.2. Expand best practices to data in other domains.
This task will use the experience of GBIF to engage with researchers in other, but related domains (agriculture, forestry, environment, ...). This will be primarily done within the ISA’s community, and will cover open data, standards, data quality and data management. It will also enable the Node to be actively interacting in data centres of other domains.
WP4 - MAINTAIN AND MANAGE THE INFRASTRUCTURE
Task 4.1. Update informatics tools and platforms.
Current versions of the communication portal www.gbif.pt and data portal dados.gbif.pt need to be updated to new versions. Although this does not directly impact data publication and best practices, it can limit the support to new activities by the node. In relation to the data portal, it is also aimed to become active within the Living Atlases developed community. Updates on the IPT platform will be readily performed, to support the new data model.
WP5 - PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND EXTERNAL LINKS
Task 5.1. Consolidate data centre management.
This work package will be responsible for the management of the project, including preparation of reports and deliverables. It will also ensure that fundamental documents (e.g. data policies, data management plan, technical documentation, etc.), that already exist in the scope of GBIF, are documented at the national context and readily available as deliverables.
Task 5.2. Share and collaborate with peer data centres.
The Node will be actively involved in expanding open science, sharing and collaborating with other data centres. This will be done by promoting exchange of experience and expertise, with special focus on the interoperability of data.
