The Universidade dos Açores recently published the checklist entitles "A List of the Terrestrial and Marine Biota from the Azores", through GBIF. The checklist covers all of the species of the main terrestrial and marine biological groups existing in Azores, and is the first resource published by this institution, which was recently registered as a Portuguese GBIF publisher. Checklist data, now available in digital Darwin Core format, includes information for a total of 8047 terrestrial species and subspecies, and 491 marine taxa (species or subspecies).
The checklist, edited in 2010 (Borges et al., 2010), was was coordinated by investigators from CITA-A (Azorean Biodiversity Group), CIBIO-Azores and IMAR-DOP, with the additional collaboration of about 120 researchers, using published data, but also non-published data verified by the authors. The checklists offer information, for the terrestrial taxa, of the distribution of the species at the island level, whenever possible. The checklist dataset is available through the GBIF.org portal, or directly through the IPT platform hosted by the Portuguese Node.
The Universidade dos Açores, through its Azorean Biodiversity Group (ABG-cE3c) research group is already collaborating with the Portuguese Node of GBIF to publish soon the checklist of Madeira, edited in 2008, and occurrence data from the Portal de Biodiversidade dos Açores.
