Summary

This project aims to describe reporting processes and data flows in five European countries, investigate how GBIF could facilitate reporting and recommend changes to GBIF tools/procedures, if needed. Best practices will be identified, summarized and spread to all European countries.

The call for applications to the 2018 Ebbe Nielsen Challenge will be open on 9 May 2018. The challenge seeks to encourage innovative uses of and applications for the open biodiversity research infrastructure supported by GBIF. These creative applications of GBIF-mediated data can come in a wide variety of forms and formats—for example, new analytical research, richer policy-relevant visualizations, web and mobile applications, improvements to processes around data digitization, quality and access, or something else entirely.

A próxima formação do Nó Português do GBIF será dedicada ao sistema de gestão de coleções biológicas Specify 6. Este curso irá realizar-se no Instituto Superior de Agronomia, em Lisboa, de 7 a 9 de Fevereiro de 2018. O Specify 6, em conjunto com a versão web Specify 7, constitui um sistema de gestão de coleções biológicas utilizado para a gestão de mais de 500 colecões em 38 países. O sistema é desenvolvido pela Universidade do Kansas, que o disponibiliza em opensource.

The Portuguese Node of GBIF, through its participation in the Research Infrastructure PORBIOTA, is seeking for a collaborator in computer sciences. The research grant contract will run for 36 months and requires a master degree in computer sciences. The collaborator will support the implementation and maintenance of the Portuguese Biodiversity Data Portal in the context of biodiversity data for Portugal. He will also help in the development of computing services for PORBIOTA and to manage referecence species databases.

The Ebbe Nielsen Challenge 2017 Challenge promotes the development of tools for the discovery and reuse of biodiversity data available in open access digital repositories. This challenge aims to make it easier to overcome the difficulty of discovering and using such data, particularly when they are not available in standard format or accompanied by a sufficient set of metadata that ensures their identification by users. The challenge therefore is to develop tools, for example to:

a) the automatic search of open data in public repositories;

Open call for GBIF Young Research Award 2017

The call is now open for the submission of applications to the 2017 Young Researchers Awards, by post-graduation students, which may win one of the two available prizes of 5000 €, one for a master's student, and another for a PhD student.

GBIF Portugal, GBIF Spain and College Food, Farming and Forestry (F3) of the University of Lisbon are launching a call for applications to the regional training course Use of Agrobiodiversity information in GBIF and other databases which takes place on 28, 29 and 30 of June, in Lisbon. The workshop is an initiative developed in the scope of the project Agrotraining, which is supported by the GBIF CESP programme.

It was launch today by GBIF Portugal, GBIF Spain and College Food, Farming and Forestry (F3) of the University of Lisbon the QUESTIONNAIRE ON THE NEEDS IN THE USE OF AGROBIODIVERSITY INFORMATION, run under the scope of the project Agrotraining which aims at uncovering needs of biodiversity information in the domain of Agrobiodiversity.
